In our experience, Health Insurance Plan Reps hopefully out of inefficiency and lack of training, but we have heard and suspect, on purpose (to confuse and complicate) routinely lie, misrepresent and are unaccountable with information they give you the Patient and Us the Provider. We as Providers we want to provide good care, and you as the Patient want to feel better. We usually don’t have the time, knowledge or training to understand the nuances. And they try to prey on this and get away with doing illegal things. This causes confusion for you as a Patient and can strain the relationship with us, even though the Insurance Plan is something we did not pick for you.
There is great profit for the Health Insurance Plan in willfully, or out of ignorance, misrepresenting facts and creating problems like:
- Go to an In-Network Provider, it will cost you less (It can also mean it is a Provider who is being paid much lesser, and likely able to provide only sub-par care). Further, having a PPO by definition, means you should be able to go to ANY Provider you choose. Especially a good Provider referred by a Friend or Family member based on their own experience.
- Muddling simple information flow in their bureaucratic processes
- “Long-hold” (15-45 minutes) 1-800 numbers
- Giving the run around etc.
